This is for 1 gallon, 2 gallons or 3.5 gallons of gray hypertufa mix.
Pre-mixed hypertufa medium for making planters, garden décor, vessels & more. This is the perfect mixed ratio of gray Portland cement, sphagnum peat moss & perlite. Just add water to complete the mix. You can add textures or aggregate for several different rustic effects. Items made with this achieve a nice ancient looking patina and/or easily grow lichens and moss on the sides depending on where they are kept.
Instructions:
*please use rubber gloves and a paper face mask during this step as the cement can irritate the skin and the dust can be harmful if inhaled. Outdoors is also the best place to mix.*
1.
Mix in just enough water to make the approximate consistency of peanut butter. It should easily make a ball that will hold together without dripping any water.
2.
Pack the mixture into the desired shape freehand or into a mold such as a bowl or box. If using a mold, spray the inside liberally with some basic plain cooking spray as a releasing agent. For planters, insert a piece of wooden dowel, wine cork or bottle cap to the bottom for a drainage hole.
3.
Wrap your creation in plastic, such as a garbage bag and leave in a shady area for 24 hours, then remove from the mold if used. Remove any drainage inserts. Use a wire or regular cleaning brush to clean up the edges or rough the sides up if you like. You can also use a rasp or file for more shaping if need be at this stage. Then spray item liberally with water.
4.
Put your creation back in the plastic bag, mist the item with a bit of water and close the bag. Keep in a shady area for two weeks to one month for curing, re-misting the item every two or three days to keep it damp. Portland cement requires moisture & time to properly cure. Proper curing will insure strength and dramatically reduces the chances of cracking while also making the item last much longer.
5. The fifth step is optional depending on the type of plant you will have in it. You can skip this step if you use it for alkaline loving plants. For neutral PH or acidic loving plants, you will need to leave it out in the sun & weather for another week or two to leach out the alkalinity. Soak it down good with water every 2 to 3 days. At this stage you can use it as is or paint and/or seal it with acrylic paint and/or a water based clear poly sealer.
Shipped in USPS flat rate priority envelopes or boxes.
